Wayne Smith of Griswold CT, a man known for his infectious humor and generous heart, passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2026. He was 71 years old. Wayne was one of those rare souls who could brighten a room with nothing more than a well-timed joke or a big, warm smile. His laughter was a constant, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Wayne was known for his unwavering work ethic. He began working at a young age for the Mackin family on their farm before moving into concrete work. He took great pride in his nearly 52‑year career with Kaman Aerospace, where he formed many lifelong friendships. Wayne also dedicated 17 years of service as an Auxiliary Trooper with the Connecticut State Police.
Wayne's love for life was evident in everything he did. A friend to everyone in the neighborhood, Wayne was always the first to offer help, whether it was mowing a lawn, plowing a driveway, or lending a hand with any task at all. He enjoyed hunting, splitting wood and loved to cook for his family and friends. His generosity knew no bounds, and he made sure those around him felt cared for and supported.
A man of simple pleasures, Wayne had a deep affection for "The Camp," his cabin in the woods where he and his beloved wife, Nancy, spent countless hours making memories and creating a beautiful haven to share. He loved tending to the land, always working to make "The Camp" more beautiful, a testament to his dedication and love for the simpler joys of life.
Wayne was also a devoted father to his sons, Shane and Aaron. He was a rock for them, always there with a listening ear, words of wisdom, or a funny story to brighten their day. His memory was sharp, and he had an endless supply of stories to share, recalling moments from his past with a clarity and warmth that made his life feel like a grand adventure.
He found great joy in the companionship of his two loyal dogs, Bailey and Harper, who were never far from his side. He loved them dearly and often joked that they were spoiled, always ensuring they were well-fed (perhaps a bit too much at times).
After a hard day of work, Wayne could often be found enjoying a glass of Taylor Port and a cigar, savoring the fruits of his labor with quiet satisfaction. It was in these moments, surrounded by his loved ones, his dogs, and his memories, that Wayne was truly at peace.
Wayne's laughter, generosity, and love for life will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and devotion to family and friends. Wayne is survived by his wife, Nancy (Pepin) Smith; his sons, Shane Smith and wife Jennifer and Aaron Smith and wife Tewana; Mother, Cora Smith; Sister, Linda Mackin; Brother, Richard Smith Jr.; Grandchildren, Izaya, Kobe and Willow, Great-Granddaughter Stella, as well as many special nieces and nephews and his beloved dogs, Bailey and Harper.
Wayne was predeceased by his father Richard Smith Sr. and his brother Gary Smith.
A celebration of Wayne's life will be held at The Jacques Cartier (French) Club on April, 4 at 4pm (444), with a gathering of friends and family to share stories and remember the man who touched so many lives with his humor, generosity, and love.
Rest in peace, Wayne. You will be missed more than words can express, but your spirit, humor, and love will live on in all of us.
