Theresa Claire (Fontaine) Messier

MYSTIC, CT – Therese Claire Messier, 97 passed away Friday, February 3, 2023 at Westerly Hospital in Westerly, RI from natural causes. Born in Norwich, CT on October 14, 1925, she was the daughter of Albert Fontaine and Aurore Rondeau Fontaine.

Therese married Normand J. Messier after he returned from serving in the 38th Armored Infantry of the U.S. Army at the Normandy Invasion. They were married at St. Mary's Church in Jewett City, CT on September 3, 1945. In 1985 they retired to Ft. Myers, FL where they lived until Normand’s death on September 28, 2018. Upon Normand’s death, Therese moved back to CT and was able to spend much quality time with her family. She lived in independent living at Masonicare at Mystic where she made many new friends. Therese loved being with people and greatly enjoyed social gatherings with family and friends. Her hobbies included making rosaries, knitting winter hats and reading.

Therese is survived by her four children: Normand J. Messier Jr. and wife Carolyn, John A. Messier Sr. and wife Mildred, Mark A. Messier and wife Anna-Liisa and Joyce M. Welsh and husband Edward (Jim); six grandchildren: granddaughter, Kirsten Messier; grandsons: Jeffrey Messier and wife Stacy, John Messier Jr. and wife Anya, Jason Messier, Justin Messier, Eric Messier and wife Heather, and Kevin Messier; nine great-grandchildren: Tyler, Sean, Brienna, Caden, Lyla, Gabriel, Maja, Kaja, and Jacob. She is also survived by her sister, Claire Martin, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Alice Pothier.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home in Griswold, CT from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 17, 2023 at St. Catherine Church in Preston.
