Stephen R Gwiazda, 84, passed peacefully on April 8, 2026 at Colonial Nursing and Rehab in Plainfield with his wife and daughter beside him.
Steve was born in Chelsea, MA on September 11,1941 to the late Bernard and Sarah (Riel) Gwiazda but grew up in Norwich, CT. After graduating from Norwich Tech he served as a Seabee in the Navy before working as an electrician at Piela Electric and retired from Wyre Wynd in Jewett City. The love of his life was Patricia Osga whom he married on June 5,1965 at St. Thomas Church in Voluntown. They settled on Pachaug Pond working together to transform her family’s cottage into a house and home of many happy memories.
Steve quietly lived his faith attending weekly mass; he helped his neighbors by plowing Osga Lane in the winter and maintaining it in the summer. His neighbors could always count on him to be there for whatever they needed.
He is survived by his wife Patricia and daughter Stephanie (Wallace Scrapchansky), nephews John (Cindy and daughter Mary) Lester Fitch (Holly) and Keith Fitch (Tracey), nieces Sarah Fitch, Sandra Osga and Lori Osga as well as great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Carol Fitch, brother Paul Gwiazda, brothers in law Lester Fitch, Robert and Richard Osga, nephews Scott Gwiazda and Ricky, Matthew and Michael Osga and niece Dawn Osga.
Steve enjoyed being a member of the Mystic Rod and Gun Club, Veterans Coffee House and treasured the friendships he had from high school to the Maine hunting camp. Special thanks to the wonderfully caring staff at Colonial, the services of Masonicare and the spiritual strength of Father Tom Griffin of Sts. Thomas and Anne and the friars of Our Lady of Guadalupe Friary in Griswold.
In lieu of flowers please donate in his memory to Sts Thomas and Anne Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00AM Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Sts Thomas and Anne Church with burial to immediately follow at Pachaug Cemetery, Griswold, CT.
