Shirley Ann Bursott

Shirley Ann Bursott, 83, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 13, 2022. Born November 11, 1938 to Leslie Oliver Bursott & Jennie Faye (Floyd) Bursott in Detroit MI. As a young Navy wife she moved from Michigan to Groton CT, where she raised her five children. While raising her children, she was a Girl Scout leader with a love for nature and higher education, leading countless young women to become world changers. When she became a born-again Christian she volunteered and worked in the church. With her love for special needs children she developed and implemented a special needs Sunday school class at Norwich Southern Baptist Chapel. She served as the Sunday school teacher and vacation Bible school director for a number of years. Shirley loved to write, often writing letters of encouragement and support to everyone she had an address for, including church members, prisoners, military service men and women, presidents, governors, and many others. Throughout her lifetime she worked a variety of jobs, everything from a psychiatric aid to an armed security guard, but the role she enjoyed the most was grandmother and 'GG'. Shirley is survived by all five of her children; Susan (Mathews) and Ben Hull, Shelley Mathews, Allison (Mathews) and Michael Riley, Allen R. Mathews Jr., and Angela (Mathews) Adams. Shirley is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as her ex-husband Allen R. Mathews. Shirley was preceded in death by son-in-law Luc Bergeron, grandson Chris Gibson, and ex-husband Dan Conroy. A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at 1pm Saturday, May 7th 2022 at Norwich Worship Center (165 Lawler Ln, Norwich CT).
