Merry Lee (Mattern) Sylvia

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Merry Lee Sylvia. Merry, devoted mother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away on April 18, 2025. 

Merry was born on May 12th, 1959 in Norwich, CT. She grew up in Preston and was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy. Merry was predeceased by her father, George Richard Mattern and Mother, Carroll Ann Mattern. She is survived by her son, Colton Sylvia, who was her greatest accomplishment and center of her entire world. Merry is also survived by her 5 siblings;  George Mattern, Mark Mattern, Lynn Kramm, Kelly Hunka, and Alwynn Mattern; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Merry’s son Colton was more than just a son to her, he was her best friend, her proudest achievement, and her biggest passion in life. Merry shared a bond with Colton that is indescribable. Aside from her devotion to her son, Merry had the natural gift of helping others in times of need. She was empathetic and wise beyond her years, always offering insightful guidance to those who needed it. 

Merry also enjoyed spending time with her three cats, watching episodes of Judge Judy, and reminiscing on days at the Mattern property. In earlier years, she loved visiting Maine and being part of canoe trips down the Saco River. 

Merry had a huge heart and always had the ability to make anyone smile. She was non-judgmental and was a safe space for many people in her life. She was an active listener and an avid supporter to those she loved and cared about. 

Merry will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known her. A private celebration of life will be held in the summer.
