Voluntown – Matthew George Roohr, Sr. passed away Friday, December 13, 2024 at WW Backus Hospital.
He was born August 16, 1958, in Syracuse, New York the youngest son of George M. Roohr and Ruth (Coleman) Roohr.
Matt worked for 42 years as an Electronics Service Engineer at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut. He enjoyed his work greatly and was very proud of his work on the Trident, Sea Wolf, Los Angeles, and Virginia Class submarines. He also worked 23 years as the North Stonington Animal Control Officer. He had a great love for all animals and enjoyed finding them good homes whenever possible.
Matt enjoyed the outdoors and loved memories of his canoeing and camping trips with friends. He always had a story or joke to make people his met smile.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years Robin (Darby) Roohr, his two children Matthew G. Roohr, Jr, of Griswold, Amanda Darby (James Dick, IV) of Colorado, his brothers Thomas Roohr of Florida, Lawrence Roohr of Colorado and sister Diane (David) Cummings, of Norwich. Also, by his mother in law Mrs. William Darby, Sr., of Glastonbury, his brother in law William Darby, Jr. of Glastonbury, and his sister in law Lisa Darby, of Norwich and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his godson Nathan Howell of North Stonington. Matt also leaves two very dear friends, Robert Cooney, of Cape Cod and Mark Brenek of Voluntown. The stories they could tell!
The Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home in Jewett City, Connecticut has been entrusted with the private arrangements. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the Voluntown Fire and Ambulance Department, 205 Preston City Road, Voluntown, Connecticut 06384.
