Joyce E. (Sweet) Cassidy

Joyce E. (Sweet) Cassidy, 84, of Voluntown passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025 after a brief illness.  Born on March 30, 1941, Joyce was the daughter of the late Allen and Eileen (McKenna) Sweet.  She grew up in Griswold and later made her home in Voluntown where she and her husband, Francis Cassidy Jr., raised their family.  Joyce and Francis were married on June 13, 1959, and shared over 60 loving years together before his passing on September 26, 2020.

Joyce worked as a nurse’s aide for many years at Summit Convalescent Home.  In her retirement, she enjoyed time at the Narragansett Salt Water Fishing Club and was a devoted parishioner of St. Thomas Church.  She was a member of the Voluntown Seniors and Voluntown Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.  She visited with her loved ones weekly and treasured the time they spent together.

She is survived by her sons Michael (Lynne) Cassidy and Keith (Darlene) Cassidy all of Griswold; her daughter-in-law Kelly Cassidy of Voluntown; her grandchildren Amanda (Cody) Marthaler, Melissa, Patrick, Madisyn, and Shelby Cassidy; and her great grandchildren Annabelle and Caleb Marthaler.  She also leaves behind her brothers James and Wayne Sweet, her sister Kathy Ross, many nieces and nephews, and her new favorite young friend Will.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her son Peter Cassidy, brothers Allen Jr., Harold, and Douglas Sweet and sisters Joan Trudeau, Linda Gaudreau, and Donna Barry.

A calling hour will be Monday, May 19, 2025 from 9am – 10am at Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home in Griswold.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30am at St. Thomas and Anne Church in Voluntown.  Burial will immediately follow at St. Thomas Cemetery in Griswold.
