James B. Mackin, 81, went to be with the Lord on June 29th, 2024. He was born on October 18th, 1942 to Walter and Sophie Mackin of Jewett City, CT. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Linda, his four children Shawn Tonucci, Jesse Mackin, Gary Mackin, and Chad Mackin, eight grandchildren, brother Gregory Mackin, nieces and nephews, and numerous others who he considered family.
Jim was known for many things. He was a mammoth of a man who could do just about anything. He began work as a farmer and held many other jobs such as a machinist, truck driver, and concrete and excavation contractor. Out of all of the jobs he had in his lifetime, none meant more to him than building his proudest creation: The Countryside Campground from the ground up. Jim, his wife, and children broke ground in Griswold, CT in 1972 to start developing his dream. Little did he know Countryside Campground would prove to be much more than a place for people to camp at. It served as a safe-haven for any and all who set foot on his land. Jim shared his greatest achievement with many people from all walks of life. From the homeless to those who needed medical care. He went out of his way to ensure that all felt respected, cared for, and deeply loved.
James is predeceased by his brothers Walter Mackin Jr., Rudy Mackin, Richard Mackin, and Daniel Mackin, his sister Elaine Cote, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 10:00AM, Monday, July 8, 2024 at the Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home, Jewett City, CT. Burial will immediately follow in Pachaug Cemetery, Griswold, CT.
