James Dermott Kenny (known as Jim to some loved ones and Derry to others) died April 2, 2022 at home after a brief illness. Born on July 20, 1946 in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Balsam) Kenny who brought him to their summer bungalow in Highlands, NJ a few days later. He remained a lover of the Jersey Shore and all its memories of childhood summers there, often returning to celebrate birthdays with a fresh fish meal.
After graduating high school he learned the craft of watch repair from John T. Kenny Jewelry, his parent’s store in the Bronx. His studies continued at the Bulova Watch Company in Queens County, NY. He served the United States Navy in the Azores and then in Brunswick, Main where he met the love of his life, Bernadette whom he married shortly after discharge. Following in his parent’s footsteps, he joined another family business, Grader Jewelers in Norwich, CT where he served for 40 years, many as store manager. He was a member of Montville Rotary and served a term as president.
This good, faithful and beloved man of great heart and strength, but gentle and caring of all who came within his ambit, is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bernadette Maria Kenny, his daughters; Kristin and Danielle Kenny, two granddaughters Olivia and Felicia and her partner Aron and two great-grandchildren, Jennie and Aron; his brothers John Kenny of Cleveland, OH, Robert Kenny of Spring Hill, FL and his “big” sister, Sister Bernadette Kenny of Tarrytown, NY.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2022 from 10:00-11:00AM at the Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home 490 Voluntown Road Jewett City, CT. A Memorial Service will immediately follow at 11:00AM at the funeral home. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
