James was born on September 21, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois, a son to Blanche (Patechino) Boyle and the late Joseph Gifford.

James is survived by, his mother Blanche Boyle and sister Julianne Knutson (Craig), and niece, Amber.
James is predeceased by his father and two brothers, Joseph M, and John A Boyle, sons of the late Everett Boyle.
