George Freeman Porter, 80, of Voluntown, passed away peacefully in his sleep while in Hospice care, after a series of sudden and serious illnesses. George is survived by his loving wife of 11 years, Marilyn Millar Porter, his sister and brother-in-law Ethel M. and Robert S. Palmer, Jr., of Gig Harbor WA, and his nieces Karen Palmer and Kathy Gruber. He is also survived by multiple stepchildren, several sisters and brothers-in-law and their families, numerous cousins in Nova Scotia, and many dear friends.
George was the son of George Freeman Porter, Sr. and Flossie Marie Porter (both deceased). He was born in New London, and raised in Quaker Hill. He graduated from Waterford High School. George was a volunteer firefighter at Quaker Hill Fire Company, where he rose to the paid position of Captain. He was a veteran of the United States Army who served in the National Guard during the Vietnam era, from January 1964 until his honorable discharge in January, 1971. He was awarded the CT State Emergency Service Ribbon, which has only been awarded 35 times since its inception in 1955.
George was a long-time employee of the former United Nuclear Corporation in Montville, which fabricated nuclear products for the United States Navy. He was a Group Leader in Core Assembly beginning in 1968 and remained through the closing of the facility in 1992. He was also the second shift Fire Brigade Captain.
George enjoyed many leisure time hobbies over the years. He especially loved cars, boats, animals, golfing, and playing cards with family and friends. George had a special connection with animals, and his cat Pepper misses him tremendously.
George's wife Marilyn and his entire extended family would like to thank the Backus Hospital Palliative Care and Hospice teams for their exemplary levels of communication, compassion, and care for George during his final weeks of life. We extend our sincere gratitude to each of the doctors, nurses, and overnight sitters for your benevolence and support.
Family and friends are invited to attend the graveside service for George, which will be held at Pachaug Cemetery on Saturday, September 28th, beginning at 11:00 AM.
