Gary Victor Smith passed at home on September 7th, 2024 with his mother by his side. Gary was born on July 16, 1949 in Springfield VT to Richard Smith Sr. and Cora (Cote) Smith. At the age of 3, Gary was accidentally caught in an icebox unit that left him disabled. This unfortunate event was one of the catalysts that helped pass the Refrigerator Safety Act.
Gary spent many years in VT and while there spent many weekends with one of his caregivers Sherry at the lake. When Gary moved to CT he enjoyed his time spent at his sister and brother-in-law’s Countryside Campground. He attended The ARC of Southeastern CT for many years. Gary loved being outdoors, parties, country music and of course a good polka. He enjoyed watching game shows and calling out answers. He liked to travel whether it was his trip to Disneyworld, going to the Slater Mill Flea Market on Sundays where he made many friends, going to the fairs or just helping make and eat cookies. He was always game to go out to a restaurant and eat. Gary always had a little gleam in his eye and an infectious laugh, which you couldn’t help but laugh along when he did.
Gary was predeceased by his father Richard Smith Sr. and his brother-in-law James Mackin. He leaves behind his mother Cora Smith, his sister Linda Mackin, brother’s Richard Smith Jr. (Patricia), and Wayne Smith (Nancy), many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves many caregivers who gave him incredible care so he could be at home; Cathy Cote, Larry Cote, Gina Mackin, Donna Baribeault, Beth Plante, Helen Goss, and Fior Guaba to name a few.
A graveside service will be held on October 12th at 11:00 then to the VFW Taylor Hill at 1:00 for a gathering for family and friends.
