Earle E. Whipple, 93, passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at his home in Griswold, CT.
Earle was born on February 11, 1928, in Griswold, CT, the youngest of four children to George and Carrie (Wilcox) Whipple. Known as Bud to his family, Earle grew up in Griswold and lived here his whole life except when he served his country. He was in the Army Air Corps during World War II. There he worked as an airplane mechanic. Upon his return home to Griswold, he took up dairy farming on Route 201.
In 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth (Baah). He willingly took on the role of patriarch to the large family she brought with her. Sadly, she left him in this world in 1993 following a long illness. However, he continued to be the head of a growing family. By the time of his death, Earle had more than 20 grandchildren, over 30 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren. Lovingly called “Grandpa,” the whole family will miss him.
In his 60’s, Earle came to know the love of Jesus and was baptized at the First Congregational Church in Griswold in 1991. He served with honor as a Deacon and on the search committee.
Earle was considered a wise man, full of humor and as humble as they come. He was quick-witted and loved to banter. He loved to learn and was passionate about the Civil War. He was an outdoorsman through and through. Even in the fall of 2020, he was out helping his family with gathering wood for their home and feeding their small farm of pigs and chickens. He was fun-loving and took delight in the babies and young children in his family.
Earle is predeceased by his parents and siblings as well as his wife. He is survived by several of his step-children, many of his grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren. The family is appreciative of the loving care provided by his grandchildren, Darrell (DJ) and Desiree Phillips, for the past 6 years.
The public calling hours are 5-7 PM at Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home on Voluntown Road in Griswold, CT. Due to COVID, the funeral is private.
In place of flowers, donations can be made to the First Congregational Church of Griswold, 878 Voluntown Road, Griswold, CT 06351.
