Diane Coon Obituary

Preston - Diane Mae Coon, 86, passed away October 25, 2024 just six days after the passing of
her husband William Edwin Coon. She was at home, surrounded by her family.
Diane was born at Norwich Backus Hospital on August 4, 1938 to Mabel Hartman
and Michael Meronek. She leaves behind her sisters, Susan Rostenberg of Preston
and Caroline Avery of Franklin. Diane was predeceased by her mother Mabel A.
Stanley and Stepfather Cecil N. Stanley as well as a brother Michael Meronek of AR.
Diane graduated from Norwich Free Academy with the Class of 1957 where she
found joy in her studies, especially in Home Economics. Upon graduation she
worked as a bookkeeper at Thermos, honing skills she would later bring to the family
business.
Diane and William married on February 6, 1959 and together built a home on Spicer
Road, raising a family and establishing Coon Construction, where Diane managed
the office. Their hard work and dedication allowed the business to thrive and it
continues today as William Coon & Son.
She leaves behind three children, Timothy Coon of Preston, Lynn Egan of
Southampton, NY and Christen Fotta of Plymouth, MA as well as 10 grandchildren
and 6 great-grandchildren. Above all, Diane was a devoted mother, wholeheartedly
involved in her children’s activities, from enduro motorcycle events and baseball
games to 4-H meetings. She created a lifetime of memories and taught her family
the values of dedication and love.
Diane found personal joy in cooking, baking and gardening. She also enjoyed
knitting, quilting and rug hooking. Her family will forever remember her famous
homemade bread and apple pie.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his loyal caregivers and to Hartford
Healthcare Hospice at Home for their compassionate support.
At the request of the family a graveside service will be private. In lieu of flowers
please consider a donation to the Preston Historical Society.
