Clara Louise (Johnson) Hopkins

August 13, 1928 ~ August 19, 2022 (age 94)


Clara Louise Hopkins (Johnson) went home to be with her Lord on August 19, 2022.  She was 94.  Clara was born on August 13, 1928, in Norwich.   She was the last surviving child of Carl and Hattie Johnson and had eight brothers and sisters.  Clara was a 1946 graduate of Windham High School.  In 1948, Clara married the love of her life, Philip (Phil) G. Hopkins, in Franklin and they were married for 65 years.  In 1953, Clara and Phil moved to Preston where they lived for the rest of their lives.  There they raised eight children: Philip F. (Nancy) of Willimantic, Dwight (Betsy) of Preston, Douglas (Janet) of Brooklyn, Jean Craig (John) of Preston, Lois Schroeder (Matthew) of Griswold, Robin (Brenda) of Griswold, Susan Terrell (David) of Preston, and Jon of Preston.  Clara was predeceased by her husband and eldest son Philip. Clara and Phil also had 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. After being a homemaker and raising her children, Clara was employed in the Preston School system, where she worked as a cook for 15 years.  Clara and Phil loved to travel.  They enjoyed many motorcycle trips, some as far as Nova Scotia; a family land/sea cruise to Alaska, as well as many family vacations in Myrtle Beach, SC.  Clara and Phil also traveled to Europe and Israel with their church family.  Clara was a dedicated member of the Preston City Congregational Church for 65 years.  While in Israel with members of the church, Deacon Clara Hopkins served communion in the Garden of Gethsemane.    In addition to serving as a Deacon, she was a longtime member of the supper committee and worked tirelessly at numerous fundraising events.  Clara was an avid gardener, enjoyed crocheting, knitting, needle point and quilting.  There will be a memorial service celebrating Clara’s life at the Preston City Congregational Church on Saturday August 27, 2022, at 10:00 AM.  Burial will immediately follow at Palmer Cemetery in Preston.  The Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home 490 Voluntown Road Jewett City, CT has been entrusted with arrangements.
