Andrew Joseph Nugent

Andrew “Andy” Joseph Nugent, 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 18th, 2022, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, CT.  He was born on January 17, 1930, in New York City to the late Joseph and Ellen “Maggie” Margaret (Godfrey) Nugent.  He is survived by his wife of nearly 71 years, Catherine “Joyce” (Guerins) Nugent.

Andy honorably served his country in the US Army for 20 years retiring in 1971 from White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.  He and Joyce moved to southern California where they lived close to the Pacific Ocean and developed deep and long-term relationships with hundreds of people.  Their home was the destination for the entire family around the world!

Throughout his life his focus was on friends and family, but his Joyce was the love of his life and he truly adored her.  Andy and Joyce moved to Connecticut in 2018 where they initially lived in Groton and then with their son and daughter-in-law in Preston.  Connecticut reminded Andy so much of his boyhood in Ireland, especially the stone walls.

Andy was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Margaret “Maggie” Ellen Nugent and his sister Maureen Wright.  He is survived by his wife Catherine “Joyce” Nugent, his son Sean Nugent, his daughter-in-law Mary Jo (Burke) Nugent, his sister Carmel (Nugent) Hickey, and his brother Joseph & sister-in-law Anne Marie Filbey.  Andy touched the lives of many in his lifetime making each feel that they were also related to him.

A Funeral Rights Mass will be held 10:30AM Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Preston, CT.  A Formal Memorial Funeral Mass with military honors and a “Celebration of Life” to follow will be held 10:00AM June 14, 2022, at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Preston CT.  The Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home 490 Voluntown Road Jewett City, CT has been entrusted with the arrangements.  For online condolences please go to www.gagnefuneralhome.com.
