Music by The Piano Brothers

Dorothy Faulise Doucette, who was born in New York City on May 12, 1929, peacefully passed away on October 2, 2018. She was a real renaissance woman who served in the Connecticut State Legislature; developed youth programs for kids in Griswold; opened her own restaurant; rescued animals; and put everyone else to shame on the dance floor. Fiercely proud of her Ukrainian heritage, she made the best pedaheh and holubtsi this side of the Atlantic. Those who knew
her are still grappling with how to go on without such a force.

As a child, Dorothy moved to Lisbon, CT, with her parents, Mary and Paul Abramchuk, and her two brothers. She proudly graduated from Norwich Free Academy and soon after, on September 27, 1947, married the love of her life, John Faulise. They lived happily on Bethel Road in Griswold with their four children and opened the ice cream shop Pine Cone Dairy, which would evolve into the restaurant Faulise’s. Together, they established the first Griswold Youth Center, and organized dances for the town’s youth downstairs in Slater Library.

Dorothy was civic-minded. She dedicated most of her life to serving her area of Connecticut as a member of the Griswold Board of Education, the Democratic Town Committee, and the Zoning Board of Appeals. She served as State Representative of the 45th district for three terms, and as Griswold Town
Treasurer for several years. She also held fond memories of being den mother to
Cub Scout Pack 13.

She had an extraordinary love for her family and enjoyed cooking for others, ballroom dancing, and bowling. One of her greatest joys was singing in the Griswold Senior Chorus, always with a feather boa to add a little flair. Her love for her dogs and all God’s creatures could not be surpassed.

She is survived by her children John U. Faulise and his wife Deborah of Port Charlotte, FL and Matunick, RI; Paula F. Mikutel and her husband Steven; Mary D. Mitchell and her husband Ronald; and Theodore A. Faulise all of Griswold. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 16 great children, and one great-great grandson, one niece and nephew.
Dorothy was predeceased by her first husband John, who passed away in 1975; her husband Vernon Doucette, to whom she was married from March 19, 1994 until his passing in 2017; her brothers Theodore and Harry Abramchuk; her daughter-in-law Robin; and granddaughter Erin.

Calling hours will be held at Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home on Route 138 in Griswold on Sunday October 7 from 5-7pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas Church in Voluntown on Monday October 8 at 11am. Burial at a later date.

Dear Rick, Paula, Mary, Teddy,
My deepest sympathy on the loss of your mother. I remember your mom from those dances at the Youth Center. Our families shared good times and many visits; we especially enjoyed the Sundays spent in a booth over ice cream--my favorite was a fruit salad sundae with orange pineapple ice cream. Prayers to your family, Patty.
