Florence D. Prue, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Preston, CT, surrounded by her loving family on August 19, 2017. Florence was born in North Adams, MA on March 19, 1926, a daughter of the late William and Beatrice (Daub) Denery. She left North Adams for Hartford, CT where she proudly graduated from St. Francis Hospital Nursing School in 1947. Florence was later employed at Norwich State Hospital. She married Wilfred (Bill) Prue on February 5, 1948 in Norwich who predeceased her in 2001.
Florence and Bill built their family home in Preston where they raised eight children. They were farmers at heart, raising chickens and later growing strawberries that would be sold at their roadside stand which is now Prue’s Vegetables. Florence was particular about her berries, never selling anything that wasn’t up to her standards and using those less than perfect berries to make her renowned strawberry jam.
She was an active and giving community member. Florence was a lifetime member of the Preston City Fire Department serving as Ladies Auxiliary President. She was active in St. Catherine’s Church in Preston and together with Bill, created and cared for the prayer garden dedicated to their son Michael.
Florence enjoyed tent camping with her family in her early years and in their motorhome in later years. She got pleasure from family gatherings and particularly liked hosting the large extended family picnic at her home. Family was everything to Florence. She was the consummate, loving mother even in her final days and will be sadly missed by all.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son Michael and grandson Shane Holliday; her siblings William Denery Jr.; Margaret Sessions; and Barbara McKeever.
Florence is survived by her seven remaining children, Pat and Frank Wujcik Jr. of Gouverneur, NY; Will Prue and wife Heidi Dalton of Scottsdale, AZ; Bob Prue and friend Pam Sierpinski of Preston; Peg Holliday of Preston; Carol Flynn and friend Mike Conroy of Plainfield; Jim and Karen Prue of Griswold; and John and Teresa Prue of Pawcatuck.
She also leaves eleven grandchildren, Carole  and Doug Lynch; Frank III, Joseph and Stanley Wujcik; Michael Prue; Jeremy Silva; Kaylie and Jay Brear; Kevin Prue; Lauren and Darryl Longley; Emily and Matthew Prue; two great grandchildren, Owen and Connor Lynch and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home in Griswold. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 1:00 PM at St. Catherine’s Church in Preston. Interment will  follow within the Preston City Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to either the Preston City Fire Department, 318 Route 164, Preston, CT 06365 or St. Catherine’s, 243 Route 164, Preston, CT 06365.
