ETCM (SS) (RET) John K. Hargraves – departed for Eternal Patrol on 23 August 2019.   He was residing in Sun City Center, Florida at the time.
John Kenneth Hargraves Sr. was born in Manhattan, N.Y. in January 1931.  He was raised by his parents, Frank and Anna Hargraves and his sister Frances Irene Hargraves (all pre-deceased).  He married the love of his life, Margaret Mary Krummenacker in April 1949.  She was called to Heaven in 1999, one month shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.  Together they raised six children:  Margaret, Frances, Patricia, John, Mary and Frank.  They retired to Florida in the 1980s and resided in Terra Ceia.
John joined the US Navy in January 1948, at the age of 17.  He served onboard the USS Glennon  (DD-840), USS Corporal (346), USS Patrick Henry (SSBN 599), USS Nautilus (SSN 571), USS Skipjack (SSN 585), USS Daniel Webster (SSBN 626), USS Theodore Roosevelt (SSBN 600), USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635) and as an instructor at Submarine School.   John retired in September 1974 as Electronics Technician Chief Master (ETCM), Submarine Service (SS) E-9 with 26 years service.  At that time, he was Senior Advisor at the Submarine School in Groton, CT.  
John was most proud of his NAVY years, often reminiscing about life on a submarine. He served on the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear powered submarine and was onboard during the initial runs under the polar icecap that made it to 87 degrees N, just shy of the North Pole.  He was Chief of the Boat (COB) while serving on the USS Sam Rayburn.  His family, especially his wife served alongside as a Navy family.
After retiring, he graduated from Thames Valley Regional Technical College with an Associate of Science Industrial Management Technology degree in June 1978.  He worked for several clothing mills in Jewett City, CT and for Prudential Insurance in Norwich, CT before retiring to Florida.
John married Christine Lipscomb in May 2004, she survives him.  They have lived in Palmetto and Sun City Center FL.
John leaves behind his children and their families: Margaret and Alfred Morningstar of Voluntown,CT;  Frances and Richard Hodges of Unity, Maine; Patricia and Wendell Maciejewski of Wakefield, RI;  John Kenneth Jr. and Rachel Hargraves of Jewett City, CT; Mary and David Harvey of Thorndike, ME;  and Frank Hargraves and Steven Phillips of Lakeland, FL.  He also leaves 6 grandchildren (Brian, Diana, Benjamin, Ryan, Kimberly and Alyssa) and 5 great-grandchildren (Allison, Jesse, Maxwell, Blake and Gavin).
Burial will be private.
