Norwich – Eugene J. Rainville., 85, passed away at Norwichtown Rehabilitation on Tuesday Aug. 15, 2017.  He was born in Norwich, CT on Oct 5, 1931, a son to the late Charlotte (Babbitt) and Eugene Rainville.

Eugene was a resident of Norwich his whole life. He attended Norwich Public Schools, including NFA, from which he graduated in 1949.  During his younger years he worked on his family’s dairy farm, Valley Hill Farm, that delivered milk to the local community.  Gene held numerous jobs in the area including secretarial work at Thermos, worked as a Chief Orderly at Backus, and later worked at the Norwich State Hospital.  Gene also worked at Hale Manufacturing in Yantic and at Ortronics as a fiberoptic tester until it closed in 2002.

Gene also had a great love for music, particularly the organ from the time he was a teenager.  He was an organist at Norwichtown Congregational Church in Norwich for many years. He also was a substitute organist in many Sunday church services in the area.  Gene was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Fraternal Order of the Masons In his later years Gene enjoyed working with children as a volunteer grandparent in the Norwich Public Schools.  Gene spoke fondly of the people he met and experiences he had in his community.

He is survived by his sisters: Charlotte LePage, Gail Tarryk, Linda Merchant; his brothers: Joseph Rainville, and Allen Rainville.

Eugene is predeceased by, his parents, his two sisters June Brown and Judith Cruthers; his brothers: William Rainville and Paul Rainville;

There will be a memorial service held at the First Congregational Church located on Rt 138 in Griswold on Tuesday Aug. 22nd at 1:00 PM.  There are no calling hours and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.  Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home.
