Uncasville-Richard Walter Smith, 82, of Uncasville passed away on Monday, April 10, 2017 at Orchard Grove Specialty Care Center. Richard was born on May 9, 1934 in Boston, Massachusetts; the son of the late Benjamin E. Smith and Mildred W. Smith. He grew up in Loudon, New Hampshire and attended the University of New Hampshire, where he met his wife Joanne Matuska. They married in 1955. Richard held down several jobs, he was a teacher, a social worker, but his love was his antiques business, The Village Smithy, which he owned and operated with Joanne. Richard lived in Voluntown for many years and served as a member of the Voluntown Board of Education, and was the Chairman of the of the Republican Town Committee. Many people will remember him as Dick Smith; not Richard.
He is survived by his five children; son Jeffrey Smith and wife Robin of Jewett City, daughter Kimberly Ferrero and husband Michael of Hebron, daughter Jennifer Shea and husband Brian of Norwich, son Jonathan Smith and wife Joan of Concord, N.H., and daughter Sarah Smith and her fiancée Costa Troupakis of Goffstown, N. H. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Noah, Isaac, Miriam, Emily, Hannah, Katie, Nathan, Angelina and his great-granddaughter Payton.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law Benjamin Cuttitta of Monroe, one niece and three nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A celebration of life service for friends and family will take place on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 12:30 p.m. at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home, 490 Voluntown Road, Jewett City.
